Final meeting on project Prisons Without Risks

The activities on project of BFPA ‘Prisons without risk – a pilot initiative for preventing the spread of blood-transmitted and sexually transmitted infections in three selected Bulgarian prisons’ are implemented.
The final meeting gathered representatives of Embassy of Norway and Ministry of Justice, GDES, prisons in Sliven and Sofia, NGO sector and the whole team implemented the activities, took place at April 12, 2016 in Sofia. From its starting in April 2015 in the frame of a year 395 persons from the two target groups in the prisons in Plovdiv, Stara Zagora and Sliven were trained (150 foreseen). When training on health and legal topics the team used different approaches to work including presentations, case studies, discussions, tests, feedback. Testing and counseling on HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C was provided during every of the visits in the three places. 250 people to test and counsel were foreseen, 309 done in the frame of the project.

Prisons without Risk – trainings on legal topics for inmates in the prison in Plovdiv

The last trainings on project ‘Prisons without risk – a pilot initiative for preventing the spread of blood-transmitted and sexually transmitted infections in three selected Bulgarian prisons’ took place on April 1, 2016 in Plovdiv. A team of BFPA worked with two groups inmates on topics connected with the rights of access to health care and services. A short revision of main knowledge connected with the specificity and prevention of blood transmitted and sexually transmitted infections given in a previous training was done. The groups worked on cases in which participants had to think on and recon if and to what a degree in defined situations there is a risk of new infecting, as well what is the right to access of the affected to health care. The specificity of the procedure of treatment of HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C was explained.

Training of health mediators - class of 2016

On March 21 2016, at the “Tzaritza Yoanna- ISUL” hospital in Sofia was the official opening of the training for the class of 2016 health mediators. In Bulgaria the network of health mediators continues to expand and this year 53 more people will be trained by professors from the Public Health Faculty of Medical University (MU)-Sofia, medical specialists and experts form NNHM, BFPA and EMHPF. The trainees are with 26 more compared to 2015.
For a fifth consecutive year the training is organized by the National Network of Health Mediators (NNHM) in partnership with the Public Health Faculty of MU- Sofia. DR. Radosveta Stamenkova and Ventzislav Kirkov from BFPA are an essential part of the training team and the focus of their sessions is on reproductive health, STI and other important aspects of health prevention.
The new additions to the health mediator network were selected by competitions in the respective municipalities. The main selection criteria were at least high school education, being originally from the community, good knowledge of and empathy for the problems of the community, fluency in the language/s/ of the community.

BFPA Presented Good Practices at Event of GERT

Gender Education, Research and Technologies Foundation (GERT) implemented at 18-19 March 2016 a final conference on its project Bullying Prevention in School Environment.
The developed programme initiative is to work on prevention of violence helping to recognize the problem and to increase the capacity of parents, teachers and young people to cope with unwanted fears and consequences.
Representatives of Bulgarian Family Planning and Sexual Health Association – the projects coordinator Ralitsa Zgalevska and the young volunteer and member of the Management Board Nedko Geshev presented at the event good practices from the activity of the organization: mechanisms for working and methods for learning, connected with prevention of violence and sexual harassment.

Team of BFPA implemented trainings for staff and inmates in the women’s prison in Sliven on 10 and 11 March 2016 in the frame of the project ‘Prisons without risk – a pilot initiative for preventing the spread of blood-transmitted and sexually transmitted infections in three selected Bulgarian prisons’. The work with the two target groups included short summarizing and specific characteristics, connected with blood transmitted and sexually transmitted infections, working on cases in groups and main directions on questions connected with the rights of access to health care in prisons. The participants from the staff trained received a copy of manuals, especially developed on project.

BFPA survey about positive birth-rate measures

The Bulgarian Association for Family Planning and Sexual Health (BFPA) presented the results of a nationally representative survey conducted by KANTAR. The study took place in August 2022, among a sample of 836 people from the adult population and analyzed the measures that would positively affect the birth rate.

Final conference on ARIE project: PLHIV and fitness

On November 11, 2022, the final conference of the ARIE project was held in Sofia. The project is supported by the Erasmus+ Sport program, led by the long-standing Italian partner of BFPA ANLAIDS – Lombardia. The rest of the participating organizations are from Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia. The activities are aimed at people living with HIV (PLHIV), the goal of the project is to develop and introduce a fitness program and an activity protocol for people living with HIV. In Bulgaria the project was coordinated by Boyan Mladenov from the BFPA team. Among the participants of the conference were health specialists, professors from medical universities, NGO partners, representatives of the target group. From the Bulgarian side the most outstanding was the presentation of Prof. Radka Argirova “HIV,Covid and Monkeypox - what more we have to know”
The project aims to promote physical activity in the form of personalized guidelines among people between the ages of 18 and 50 who are living with HIV and who are on treatment, offering an innovative fitness protocol to engage them in moderate physical activity.
This is the first project in Europe specifically targeting people living with HIV and fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle and add fitness protocols to HIV therapy.

 
Presentation of the results of a regional study and recommendations for SRH services in the European Parliament - project "Youth Voices, Youth Choices"

Brussels, October 26, 2022

In the last months of 2022 the partners of the YVYC project, together with experts and young people, developed recommendations for regional policy recommendations for improvement of health and social systems and SRHR services for young people after the Covid 19 pandemic.
The recommendations are targeting decision-makers at international and national institutions.  They were presented in the European Parliament on October 26, 2022 by young advocates and experts, with the support of MEP Fred Matic. Three BFPA representatives - Victoria Nikolova, Venelin Stoychev and Pavlina Filipova participated in the EP meeting.
