Ninth National meeting of the NNHM

On Nov 10 and 11 in Sofia took place the 9th National meeting on the “Initiative for health and vaccinations” project. It is implemented by the National Network of Health Mediators with the support of government institutions, patients’ organizations and NGOs. As representatives of a partner NGO, in the event participated Dr. Radosveta Stamenkova, Executive Director, and Ventzislav Kirkov, Programme Manager of BFPA.
Health mediation has had a sustainable growth during the years – from 105 health mediators in 2010, their number has reached 170 in 2015. Next year 25 new mediators will be joining them, and will begin working after receiving a certificate for successfully passing a course at the Sofia Medical University.

Sustainable development goals post-2015 and the young people

A round table on “Sustainable development goals post-2015 and the young people” was organized by the Smart Foundation in cooperation with The National Center of Public Health and Analyses (NCPHA), the Youth Network for Development Foundation, Y-Peer Bulgaria and YouAct. Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry otf Youth and Sports, representatives of civil organizations and young activists were also present at the event. On behalf of BFPA Dr. Radosveta Stamenkova, Executice Director, took part as a moderator, as well as Ralitza Zgalevska, project coordinator.
During the meeting were presented the UN Development programme and the new sustainable development goals, which replaced the Millenium development goals. The new programme is considered to be more holistic and based on the three pillars of the sustainable development concept – economic, social and ecological, as the 17 global sustainable development goals are aimed at the following perspectives:

- To eradicate poverty
- To tackle inequalities and injustice
- To manage climate change

Prisons Without Risks – education for professionals on legal topics in Plovdiv

The second theme stage in implementing the project “Prisons without risk – a pilot initiative for preventing the spread of blood-transmitted and sexually transmitted infections in three selected Bulgarian prisons” has started. Education for staff on topics, connected with the rights of access to health care and services took place in Plovdiv prison on 26-27 October 2015.
It became clear that the access to health care is not among limited rights of the prisoners and the procedure for treatment of HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infections is being managed in different way.
The discussion covered wide range of topics connected with juridical definitions and cases from the practice, as well the possibility for changes in legislation concerning healthcare in places of imprisonment. It was also discussed on the thrust in relationships between physicians and patients and personal responsibility of the two sides.
The team implemented the training of two groups: Ivana Murdjeva, lawyer; Ventzislav Kirkov, Daniela Dikova and Ralitza Zgalevska form BFPA; Milen Chavrov from Hope Against AIDS Foundation.

Mission possible

BFPA is starting work on two new projects, supported by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism (NFM) and the Ministry of Health (MoH). On Sept 30th at the MoH the deputy-health minister Dr. Adam Persenski presented the official documentation to the hospitals, municipalities and NGOs whose projects have been granted financing under the “Initiatives for Public Health” BG 07 Program of the NFM.
The Bulgarian Family Planning and Sexual Health Association (BFPA)  is the leading partner in the project “Mission possible: Better sexual and reproductive health for young people from vulnerable communities – ways of overcoming healthcare inequalities” which is implemented in partnership with the National Network of Health Mediators (NNHM) in 14 populated areas in 13 municipalities of 8 regions.
The duration of the project is 8 months – September 2015 – April 2016
The targeted populated areas are Blagoevgrad, Chukarka (Aitos Municipality), Velingrad, Rakitovo, Peshtera, Rozino and Hristo Danovo (Karlovo Municipality), Gradetz (Kotel Municipality), Kaloyanovo and Sotirya (Sliven Municipality), Shivachevo (Tvurditza Municipality), Vakarel (Ihtiman Municipality), Kovachevtzi (Samokov Municipality), Muglizh, Straldzha.

To inform through art and work

“Don’t neglect your education”, “Don’t be in a hurry to get married”, “Follow your dreams” – three of the messages which BFPA in cooperation with health mediators and the Samokov Municipality disseminate among the young people within BFPA project “The Art to Inform”, funded by OAK Foundation. The participating children form ppor and vulnerable communities cleared the space for a children’s playground and built the sets – benches, swings and flower pots, and also elaborated their own messages for their peers – “Child fathers are not good fathers”, “Don’t rob your own childhood”, “Childhood is colourful”, “Childhood needs warmth and light” with which they decorated their playground.

BFPA survey about positive birth-rate measures

Sofia, December 5, 2022 

The Bulgarian Association for Family Planning and Sexual Health (BFPA) presented the results of a nationally representative survey conducted by KANTAR. The study took place in August 2022, among a sample of 836 people from the adult population and analyzed the measures that would positively affect the birth rate.

Final conference on ARIE project: PLHIV and fitness

On November 11, 2022, the final conference of the ARIE project was held in Sofia. The project is supported by the Erasmus+ Sport program, led by the long-standing Italian partner of BFPA ANLAIDS – Lombardia. The rest of the participating organizations are from Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia. The activities are aimed at people living with HIV (PLHIV), the goal of the project is to develop and introduce a fitness program and an activity protocol for people living with HIV. In Bulgaria the project was coordinated by Boyan Mladenov from the BFPA team. Among the participants of the conference were health specialists, professors from medical universities, NGO partners, representatives of the target group. From the Bulgarian side the most outstanding was the presentation of Prof. Radka Argirova “HIV,Covid and Monkeypox - what more we have to know”
The project aims to promote physical activity in the form of personalized guidelines among people between the ages of 18 and 50 who are living with HIV and who are on treatment, offering an innovative fitness protocol to engage them in moderate physical activity.
This is the first project in Europe specifically targeting people living with HIV and fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle and add fitness protocols to HIV therapy.

 
Presentation of the results of a regional study and recommendations for SRH services in the European Parliament - project "Youth Voices, Youth Choices"

Brussels, October 26, 2022

In the last months of 2022 the partners of the YVYC project, together with experts and young people, developed recommendations for regional policy recommendations for improvement of health and social systems and SRHR services for young people after the Covid 19 pandemic.
The recommendations are targeting decision-makers at international and national institutions.  They were presented in the European Parliament on October 26, 2022 by young advocates and experts, with the support of MEP Fred Matic. Three BFPA representatives - Victoria Nikolova, Venelin Stoychev and Pavlina Filipova participated in the EP meeting.
