The first module of the Sofia Academy for peer educators was finalized successfully

3,2,1, GO! The “Health Education” Youth Academy is officially under way. On February 4th at the Bulgarian Red Cross’s training and logistics center in the village of Lozen young people from 5 schools in Sofia (1st Secondary school, 1st ELS, 144th Secondary school, 119th Secondary school and the PSTFD) and their school councils began their education on topics vital for growing up, such as: changes during puberty, menstruation, sexually transmitted and blood-transmitted infections, prevention of HIV, family planning and contraception, sexual and reproductive health, addictions prevention, etc. The initiative relies on the method that has proven itself most successful with time – peer education. The Academy trainees will learn how to create and disseminate specific to the auditorium health messages, how to be most convincing in their communication with their class- and schoolmates and which interactive methods they could use when sharing knowledge – all this in three educational modules after which there will be a public presentation of the acquired knowledge and perceived skills. The team of young people from the 35th secondary school will join them in the second module, having already passed the first one.

New Year, new training opportunities

From the beginning of 2019 BFPA provides new training opportunities: Interactive trainings 1 ½ - 3 hours in the organization premises for groups of 6 to 15 people and for 15 to 30 participants to other working spaces. Details and confirmation at least 5 days before event is needed. Sessions can be conducted on the following languages: Bulgarian, English, French, Russian. Here are some of the proposed modules:

Topic: Delivering health messages

Appropriate for schools students and for young people who are or want to be peer educators in the field of health and sexuality education.
One, two or three from the following can be chosen (by choice):
- Communicative skills. Team building
- Puberty changes
- Hygiene
- Contraception and Family Planning
- Sexually transmitted infections including HIV
- Prevention of trafficking of human beings

The shared knowledge: Peer-to-peer education

Students, trained by BFPA in peer education, made a memorable presentation for their schoolmates and teachers on the topic of human trafficking. Alex Stefanova, Mitko Draganov, Yulia Sabandjieva and Rumen Balashov from the Romain Rolland Foreign Language High School in Stara Zagora demonstrated their good presentational skills in front of an audience of tenth-graders and impressed with their enthusiasm to share knowledge on socially significant topics, and namely - on topics concerning the health and well-being of young people. The young BFPA volunteers managed to lay out the types of potential threats that may cause involvement in trafficking for sexual exploitation and also to discuss how a person might fall in the trap through emotional attachment, which are the signs that an ad could be fake and may lead to labour exploitation; why people should be alert, and about the attention they should pay when communicating and sharing online.

Lessons for Students and Methodology for Working with Children, Parents and Teachers were Presented at the last for 2018 LAP Meeting

The following ant the last for this year meeting of the Learning Action Partnership (LAP) took place on December 5, 2018 in the office of BFPA. Colleagues from Social Inclusion Directorate in MLSP, BFPA, ARC Foundation, Know-How Center for Alternative Care of Children in NBU, Reflective Learning Bulgaria Association, GERT Foundation, NCFTP, Association Animus Foundation were present.
After a short presentation of everyone in the meeting the ideas for lessons for students in the age group 10-14 on trafficking prevention, developed by Know-How Center for Alternative Care on Svetulka project of SOS Children Villages were shared, as well as methodology for working with children, parents and teachers on topics connected with the social competences and prevention of violence, developed by a team – FICE Bulgaria (INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF EDUCATIVE COMMUNITIES), GERT Foundation and Therapeutic Communities , Bulgaria.

BFPA survey about positive birth-rate measures

Sofia, December 5, 2022 

The Bulgarian Association for Family Planning and Sexual Health (BFPA) presented the results of a nationally representative survey conducted by KANTAR. The study took place in August 2022, among a sample of 836 people from the adult population and analyzed the measures that would positively affect the birth rate.

Final conference on ARIE project: PLHIV and fitness

On November 11, 2022, the final conference of the ARIE project was held in Sofia. The project is supported by the Erasmus+ Sport program, led by the long-standing Italian partner of BFPA ANLAIDS – Lombardia. The rest of the participating organizations are from Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia. The activities are aimed at people living with HIV (PLHIV), the goal of the project is to develop and introduce a fitness program and an activity protocol for people living with HIV. In Bulgaria the project was coordinated by Boyan Mladenov from the BFPA team. Among the participants of the conference were health specialists, professors from medical universities, NGO partners, representatives of the target group. From the Bulgarian side the most outstanding was the presentation of Prof. Radka Argirova “HIV,Covid and Monkeypox - what more we have to know”
The project aims to promote physical activity in the form of personalized guidelines among people between the ages of 18 and 50 who are living with HIV and who are on treatment, offering an innovative fitness protocol to engage them in moderate physical activity.
This is the first project in Europe specifically targeting people living with HIV and fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle and add fitness protocols to HIV therapy.

 
Presentation of the results of a regional study and recommendations for SRH services in the European Parliament - project "Youth Voices, Youth Choices"

Brussels, October 26, 2022

In the last months of 2022 the partners of the YVYC project, together with experts and young people, developed recommendations for regional policy recommendations for improvement of health and social systems and SRHR services for young people after the Covid 19 pandemic.
The recommendations are targeting decision-makers at international and national institutions.  They were presented in the European Parliament on October 26, 2022 by young advocates and experts, with the support of MEP Fred Matic. Three BFPA representatives - Victoria Nikolova, Venelin Stoychev and Pavlina Filipova participated in the EP meeting.
